Wapping
Old Stairs are over three hundred years old, and are situated next
to the Town of Ramsgate public house in Wapping High
Street, which has been in existence since the 15th century Wars
of The Roses.
There is a post there to which the bodies of hanged pirates and
buccaneers were chained and left for three full tides before being
removed.
Judge Geoffreys, another notorious
'Hanging Judge' was arrested on the steps outside the pub on the
Thames. He was dressed as a sailor, trying to flee the country and
was detained just before he could board his ship.
His spirit remains trapped
on the ancient old stairs and is reportedly seen on occasion by
the Thames River Police who are headquartered nearby.
